Be Silent with God

I would argue that we all crave silence but we don’t know it. A couple years ago I learned about contemplative prayer, which is sitting in silence asking God for His presence. Having a phrase or imagining helps you focus on God when your mind wanders.

You might have seen priests or other religious people sitting on a pew and if they don’t have anything in their hands, they might have been doing this form of prayer. It is so comforting but the hard thing is to let your mind go blank and just be the Father’s child. When life throws me a curveball and I cannot handle it, I first run to this type of prayer since I am focusing on your breath. It’s a safe way to lose yourself.

About a month and a half ago I went to see some churches with some friends a few hours away. When I was finished with a decade of the rosary so I would finish a whole Rosary on the trip, I just knelt there, in prayer, letting the silence wash over me. I only wished to get up each time that I had more time to pray, but we needed to move on to the next church.

When this type of prayer was introduced to me, I couldn’t imagine that I’d want to go to it, but as I’ve grown I have realized that silence is hard to come by and God is in the silence. I started out doing 10 minutes now I’m up to 15 minutes. I notice I’m calmer with it, so I’d recommend it to anyone.
